The biopic ‘Selena’ starring Jennifer Lopez has been preserved by the National Film Registry

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – This year’s National Film Registry invitees include the iconic 1997 film, “Selena,” which tells the singer’s inspirational and tragic story Tejano music Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.

The film is a longtime fan favorite and also features actor and singer Jennifer Lopez’s breakout role.

According to the Library of Congress, the film has become a staple in Latin American culture.

“Films help reflect our cultural and creative history, and show us new ways of seeing ourselves, even though films are not always considered worthy of preservation,” said Carla Hayden , Librarian of Congress, said in a statement. “The National Film Registry will preserve our cinematic heritage, and we’re proud to add 25 more this year.”

The National Library says this year’s selections date back nearly 120 years.

The library has selected films for preservation because of their cultural, historical, and artistic importance since registration began in 1988. This year’s selected films bring the total number of films on the list. register up to 825 sets.

Other films include “Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
