It pays to be at the top!
An unorthodox ATM takes photos of Art Basel Miami Beach guests and ranks their bank balances on its “leader list” for everyone in attendance.
The ATM, created by Brooklyn art collective MSCHF, has transformed a private ordeal into a public spectacle for the most daring of guests.
Currently, an unidentified bearded man in a pink T-shirt topped the rankings with a bank balance of $2.9 million as of Tuesday.
“‘ATM Leaderboard’ is a highly literal distillation of momentum that showcases wealth,” Daniel Greenberg, co-founder of MSCHF, told CNN.
Greenberg explained that the ATM concept for Art Basel Miami Beach was created because it’s “a dense concentration of people renting Lamborghinis and wearing Rolexes.”
“Because of the camera, the ATM is continuously recording every person using it and also every place it’s installed, so we’re hoping that it will have the ability to move through more rooms,” Greenberg told CNN .
It’s currently unknown where the ATM might pop up next, but Greenberg said it would be available to anyone looking to buy or borrow this daring ATM.
The top scores stay put from place to place on the leaderboard, meaning the leaderboard could see some tight digits in the future.
The ATM is a joint effort by MSCHF and Perrotin Gallery representing Maurizio Cattelan, the artist who went viral at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019 for pasting a banana on a wall.
Founded in 2016, MSCHF is famous for collaborating with Lil Nas X to sell the controversial “Satan Shoe,” said to be made from a single drop of human blood.
Not everyone seems ready to put their card in their pocket and let the world know where they rank in the Art Basel crowd.
“Am I too broke or is it crazy that people are using this ATM at Art Basel? I don’t want anyone other than me looking at my accounts.” a Twitter user tweeted.
“Trust you and me. In a few months there will be a story saying ‘Art Basel ATM used as a scam to get bank information’.” another tweeted.
Art Basel Miami Beach has been around since 2002 and hosts a week of art, lavish parties and music festivals while artworks sell for millions of dollars.
