Texas teenager Erik Cantu, shot by San Antonio cop James Brennand, has been discharged from the hospital

A teenager, who was fighting for his life after being shot by a San Antonio police officer, has been released from hospital after a nearly two-month stay, his family confirmed on Wednesday.

Erik Cantu – who was shot multiple times by Texas police officer James Brennand in the McDonald’s parking lot – was able to be home for the holiday and his family said their “prayers have been answered”.

“We are incredibly grateful to have our son at home with us,” the family said said in a statement posted to Twitter by her attorney, Ben Crump. “Erik still has a long road to recovery but we are delighted with his progress over the past two weeks.

“It means the world to us to be able to spend Thanksgiving as a family outside of the hospital walls where we have been living since Erik was horribly injured.

“We are thankful for many blessings this week – Erik’s strength, everyone who supported us during Erik’s hospitalization and the grace of God. Many Thanks.”

At one point during his murky hospital stay, Cantu’s family said he was on life support, according to a Fox News Digital report in October. Despite the grim conditions, the family said they remain hopeful.

Earlier this month, the family said he was awake and alert after a ventilator was removed from him, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Meanwhile, Brennand is facing two counts of aggravated assault by an officer following an investigation into the Oct. 2 incident.

He was quickly released after the incident.

Police charged Brennand with violating procedures and training after he walked to the car.

Cantu was eating a burger in the car when Brennand, a rookie cop who is still on probation, arrived at the fast food joint to respond to an unrelated disturbance, police said.

Brennand spotted Cantu’s car, which he believed had swerved from him the day before, and urged the teenager to get out of the car and open the driver’s door, police training commander Alyssa Campos said during a news conference in October.

“With the vehicle door still open, the driver engaged reverse gear and tried to get out. The officer was hit by the open door. The officer then stepped back and opened fire on the vehicle as the driver backed away from him,” Campos said.

Brennand fired his gun multiple times as the car reversed and continued as it fled the scene, authorities claimed, before Cantu, who was traveling with an uninjured passenger, was found by police.

The car’s license plates did not match the vehicle, but the car was not stolen, police said.
