A Texas mother who admitted hydrocodone spiked her baby’s milk to kill the child and poison her other child will not serve time in prison.
Sapphire Elizabeth Araujo, a 37-year-old from El Paso, was sentenced Tuesday to five years probation and 80 hours of community service, news channel KFOX reported.
Araujo admitted crushing hydrocodone pills and mixing them into her then-5-month-old mother’s milk and feeding it to the baby, the outlet reported.
The mother was required to testify for a day at the trial before accepting a district attorney’s plea deal that spared her any additional time behind bars.
She pleaded guilty to reckless child injury and criminal neglect.
Her pregnancy counselor testified that “by the time she took the drug, she had reached a place of hopelessness” and that she was struggling with mental health issues, KTSM reported.
She also intended to poison her then 2-year-old before killing herself and the baby because she felt overwhelmed, according to KTSM.
The drugged infant was hospitalized at the time of the incident but has now made a full recovery, according to local reports.
Neither Araujo nor her attorney responded to the Post’s requests for comment.
