Texas authorities on Thursday rescued 84 migrants from the back of a tractor trailer in a neighborhood near the southern border.
The asylum seekers were spotted after a Weslaco resident spotted a semi truck unloading people at an apartment building in the small town, Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said.
The city is approximately 8 miles north of the US-Mexico border.
Guerra said authorities are investigating the possible human smuggling case. Further details, including the condition of the migrants and any arrests, were not immediately available.
The truck carrying the migrants reportedly appeared a day earlier in a TikTok video searching for someone to drive the $70,000 truck from McAllen to Houston, Fox News reported.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed to the outlet that the video is related to the 84 migrants found in Hidalgo County.
The department has seen an increase in similar videos seeking drivers to smuggle migrants across the country, Texas DPS spokesman Christopher Olivarez told Fox News.
“That’s why we’re seeing an increase in people smuggling incidents along the border,” Olivarez said. “Many people from major metropolitan areas like Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and even other states are recruited as drivers via social media platforms to smuggle illegal immigrants.”
