Terron Armstead signs a five-year, $75 million deal with the Dolphins

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Terron Armstead is the Miami Dolphins’ latest major free-agent signing and announced Tuesday night that he is joining the team after serving his first nine NFL seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

Armstead immediately becomes the suspected starter left tackle for the Dolphins, whose offensive line struggled at times last season. His decision came a day after the Miami visit, then he left with no deal sealed.

A person with knowledge of the agreement said Armstead will sign a five-year deal worth nearly $75 million, with about $44 million guaranteed. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as neither Armstead nor the team publicly disclosed those terms.

“I’m going to bring my talents to South Beach,” Armstead said in a video posted to his social media platforms Tuesday night, using the same line LeBron James used in 2010 when he announced he was the Cleveland Cavaliers would leave for the Miami Heat. “Miami, what’s up?”

Armstead is a three-time Pro Bowl selection — 2018, 2019 and 2020 — but was limited to eight games for the Saints last season while dealing with a knee injury and COVID-19-related issues.

Armstead is joining a Miami free agency that includes another offensive lineman, former Dallas guard Connor Williams – who spoke earlier this week about how excited he is to join the zone blocking program that new Dolphins coach Mike is leading McDaniel will use.

“O-line is a special game,” Williams said. “It’s all about camaraderie, it’s about trusting the guy on your left and right. You are never as good as your best player. You guys are as good as the strength of the whole line combined. That’s the beauty of it and I think that’s the most exciting part of the game, just being able to build that together – the chemistry together.”
