TERRIFYING video shows the moment a fuel tanker crashed and exploded in Central Rockville, creating a ball of fire that lit up the night sky.
The incident happened on Long Island, New York, around 2 a.m. local time on Wednesday.
Dramatic photos show firefighters tackling the blaze as thick plumes of black smoke rise into the air.
Firefighters were able to tame the fireball “in a relatively short time with very little injury,” said Rockville Center Fire Chief James Avondet.
Three of the 150 firefighters present at the scene were injured.
The truck driver was also injured but survived. The extent of the driver’s injuries is still unknown.
It was reported that gas had spread to several properties after an oil tanker carrying about 13,000 gallons of fuel overturned.
Avondet said there was fire “everywhere” when he arrived at the scene.
“It was one of the worst things I’ve seen in my 47-year career,” he said.
Avondet added that the fire came from seven or eight manhole covers, according to NBC4.
“There were approximately 9,200 gallons (34,825 liters) in the gas truck when it overturned and caught fire,” Nassau County Sheriff Michael Uttaro said.
An empty La-Z-Boy building was destroyed in the fire. According to reports, a nearby building was damaged.
Roads in the area remained closed this afternoon as crews continued to clear the scene.
Power in the area was temporarily cut off as a precaution, but was restored yesterday afternoon.
The New Jersey Police Department sent trucks from JFK airport to help deal with the fire.
One person tweeted: “God bless all the volunteers from our town and those around the Rockville Center who answered this call. Praying for the best.”
It is not known how the tanker overturned. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Downtown Rockville is located about 30 miles from New York City.
