The 23-year-old, fifth in the world rankings, started briskly in the third round of the tournament against American Jenson Brooksby on Monday before losing 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Tsitsipas’ elbow pain was so bad last year that the French Open runners-up considered quitting tennis altogether, but after successful surgery he had deep runs back in 2022.

“Honestly, I’m not very frustrated,” Tsitsipas told reporters after his defeat. “My arm is good. I’m happy to play on the pitch. I’m glad I compete.

“I am motivated. I want to achieve something this year. I’ll see where I can take this, where I can get it.

“I really hope that I can do well in big tournaments. But of course I’m much more grateful with the things I had before. I don’t see any negative sides in anything.”

Tsitsipas previously said his doctor was amazed at how quickly he recovered from surgery late last year.

In 2022, the Greek has reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and the ATP 500 event in Acapulco and also reached the title round in Rotterdam last month.

“There is a side I play on that is way better than I ever thought it would be,” Tsitsipas summarized his 2022 season so far.

“The fact that I play on the court brings me the greatest happiness and joy in a long time after suffering from chronic elbow problems.”
