NAPLES, Fla. – A makeshift cell tower is giving a better signal to the Naples Fire Rescue.
“On your cell phone, it would be like having a line against five,” said Chief Phillip Pennington.
Verizon has parked the mobile device behind Station 2 along North 26th Avenue, just a few feet from where the information is to reach people in an emergency. This tower will ensure quick access to important dispatch information.
Sheriff Pennington said the station had been dealing with some connectivity issues for some time. He said the tower will enhance public safety until Verizon upgrades one of its permanent towers.
“Having a tower by your back door will give us the power and signal we need. We stay connected,” says Pennington.
The temporary tower will also improve services for people living nearby. It’s unclear if Verizon will bring these cellular units to other trouble areas throughout Collier County.
