Teenage man arrested accused of shooting NC kid

BURLINGTON, NC (WGHP) – Two men are accused of firing multiple shots at a youth in Burlington, police say.

Burlington police on Friday shed new light and unveiled new charges following an arrest made earlier this week.

At 3:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a reported shooting on the 300 block of Thompson Street. At the scene, officers learned that a black two-door Honda Accord coupe drove by and those inside fired multiple shots at a child. The child was not injured. Shots hit a nearby squat.

Police arrested Kenyon Leathers, 18, of Burlington, for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and firing a gun at an occupied home. As part of the investigation, police also arrested Rarheem Bowens, 21, of Durham, on the same two counts.

Officials announced on Friday that both Leathers and Bowens would now be charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and firing a firearm into an occupied home.

These two suspects were also served with warrants from other agencies relating to unrelated offences.

The arrests came as investigators delved deeper into a series of recent shootings in Burlington.

Officials say several homes and vehicles were hit by gunfire in April and May. Nobody was hurt. Police believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward.

On Thursday, police raided a home in the 500 block of Peele Street “as a continuing investigation” into the shooting.

“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that this home was associated with our suspects,” said Lt. Nick Wright of the Burlington Police Department.

Donye Marques Dark, 23, of Mebane, has been charged with possession of a firearm by a criminal, possession of a stolen firearm and possession with intent to sell and supply marijuana. He was issued $40,000 in secured bail.

A 25-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were also arrested and charged with drug-related offences.

These three arrests are in addition to the two arrests announced earlier this month.

Police say they are continuing the investigation and may face further charges.
