Teen gets 3 to 9 years in prison for Kayla Green’s death

A teenage girl has been sentenced to a possible nine-year prison term for fatally stabbing a 16-year-old Mount Vernon cheerleader after a school party.

The 15-year-old, who has not been identified, was sentenced Tuesday by a judge to three to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter last December, the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office said.

The teenager stabbed Kayla Green to death during a large brawl after a parade in Mount Vernon to celebrate the state championship won by the high school boys’ basketball team.

The fatal event happened in Westchester last April and stemmed from a cheerleading rivalry.

Green, a sophomore, was the captain of her school’s junior varsity cheerleading squad; The defendant was part of an independent cheer club that Green was formerly a member of.

The victim was stabbed in the stomach and tragically pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital, prosecutors said.

Judge Susan Cacace laid out the motive in court on Tuesday.

“A long-standing rivalry between two cheerleading teams in the town of Mount Vernon,” Cacace said, according to CBS 2.

The defendant apologized in court before her sentence was determined.

“I’m sorry my actions took away an older sister. I’m sorry my actions took away a daughter,” the girl said, according to Lohud.com, admitting she made “bad decisions” that caused heartache for Green’s loved ones.

Green’s relatives consider the verdict and the defendant’s apology insufficient, the newspaper reported. They argued that the accused would soon be released from prison.

“Your killer can go out in three years to live her life, have a family, have a career. My daughter will never see that,” said Laverne Gordon, the victim’s mother, according to CBS 2.

Shortly after the celebration of recognizing the basketball team’s 12th state title, a huge fight was captured on cell phone footage.

District Attorney Mimi Rocah said the fatal stabbing “left a community devastated.”

“A juvenile defendant senselessly took the life of Kayla Green, leaving a community devastated,” Rocah said in a statement.

“As a family and the Mount Vernon community continue to grieve, I want to reaffirm my commitment to working with our key community partners for meaningful prevention and intervention of violence, especially for our youth.

“I know nothing can heal the pain of losing a child. My office will do whatever it can under New York law to be held accountable in these cases.”

The maximum sentence the teenager could have received was 3 to 10 years as a juvenile delinquent in New York, prosecutors found.

She will serve her time in a juvenile detention center until she turns 18, at which point she will be taken into custody by the state corrections agency, prosecutors said.
