Texas Senator Ted Cruz controversially claimed Chrissy Teigen suffered a miscarriage in 2020, but has now opted to “characterize” her as an abortion to score political points.
Teigen, 36, lost her third child – who she and husband John Legend, 43, named Jack – when she suffered an abrupt placenta and had to deliver the fetus at 20 weeks.
Placental abruption occurs when the placenta detaches from the uterus, depriving the fetus of nutrients and oxygen. The complication can kill both the mother and the unborn child.
At the time, the model told fans she suffered a miscarriage, but earlier this month she revealed her late son Jack died in a “life-saving abortion.”
“Let’s just call it what it was: It was an abortion,” the model and television personality said at social impact agency Propper Daley’s A Day of Unreasonable Conversation summit.
“An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance. And to be honest I never put this together until a few months ago.”
Teigen told the crowd they “didn’t make sense of it” until the Supreme Court ruled Roe v. Wade had fallen.
She said she sympathized with the people who had to make difficult decisions when Legend reminded her that she had been one of them.
However, Cruz, a Republican from Texas, opened up about the personal matter on his podcast, Verdict With Ted Cruz, last week when asked about it by co-host Liz Wheeler.
He sensationally suggested that she should restate her experience because of the “political context”.
“She might want to characterize it as an abortion in this political context, but she described it as a miscarriage at the time, and it certainly sounds like that’s an accurate description,” he said.
“If there is a medical procedure in this context, it is not an abortion. And it is the law of all 50 states, and it should be the law of all 50 states, that…that…doctors can intervene to save the mother’s life, even if it means the tragic loss of the child.
“There is no one, not even the … the most … robust pro-life advocates, no one argues that when the mother’s life is in danger, one cannot take extraordinary medical steps to save the mother’s life.”
People were quick to slam the senator’s claims online.
“WHEN DID ‘DOCTOR’ CRUZ GET HIS MEDICAL LICENSE?” a Twitter user boiled.
“Senator @tedcruz seems to think he has a better idea of @chrissyteigen’s medical approach than she does.” another wrote.
Another angry reviewer chimed in, tweeting, “Last time I checked Ted Cruz isn’t a gyno and doesn’t have a uterus.”
