Taylor Swift NYU inaugural speech: How to watch live as singer accepts honorary doctorate

Taylor Swift delivers the commencement address for New York University’s class of 2022 today (May 18).

The 11-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter will receive an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts degree herself at the ceremony at Yankee Stadium.

According to John Beckman, NYU’s senior vice president for public affairs, honorary degree recipients are selected for awards or achievements in areas taught and researched by the school, including science, social sciences, humanities, arts, law, medicine, and business.

“We select honorees whose talents, achievements and actions will serve as a model for our graduates,” Beckman wrote in a statement sent to The New York Times.

Previous honorees have included Aretha Franklin, Ang Lee, Bill Clinton, Janet Yellen, Billy Crystal and Justin Trudeau.

The gates will open for the Class of 2022 Opening Ceremony at 9:00am EST (2:00pm BST). The ceremony will then begin at 11:00am (4:00pm BST). At that time, Swift will deliver her address to the graduates.

The opening will be streamed live on NYU’s website, Facebook profile, and YouTube page. See below.

The announcement of Swift’s speech caused a stir in her fan base, with some students claiming they were offered up to $500 (£403) for their tickets to the ceremony.

“One girl said she was my ‘biggest fan’ with a megaphone and would cheer me on during the ceremony if I gave her a ticket,” said NYU grad Sean Nesmith The New York Post.

Graduates who receive two tickets to the opening ceremony are prohibited from selling or auctioning their tickets and could risk losing their diplomas for doing so, the college said.

Beckman reminded fans in his statement that Swift would be speaking at the event, not singing: “People should know that Ms. Swift, who we have as one of our honorary doctorates this year, will be speaking and not giving a performance.

“Obviously her fans are very enthusiastic, so I’m not sure even that awareness will dampen her enthusiasm.”

Wednesday marks an unprecedented doublehead for the university as the classes of 2020 and 2021, whose celebrations have been postponed due to pandemic-related restrictions, will also be honored in a subsequent evening event.

Swift will not be present for the second group of graduates, whose opening address will be delivered by disability rights attorney Judith Heumann.
