Tatum and Schroder Every Net 31 as Celtics Sail the Blazers Trail – CBS Boston

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Jayson Tatum and Dennis Schroder scored 31 points each and the Boston Celtics got off to a brilliant start to a 145-117 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night.

Enes Freedom picked up 15 rebounds from the bench for the Celtics, who took 14 of their first 15 shots and led by 21 points at half-time.

Coach Ime Udoka believes that Tatum’s recent success is a product of his attacking play on the basket. Tatum also scored 37 points Friday night against Utah.

“He succeeded in driving into the basket and to the free-throw line,” said Udoka. “That encouraged him to drive more and be less stable. With some of their men out, we felt we could attack some mismatches and get in the basket without a ton of rim protection and he did it well. ”

CJ McCollum scored 24 points for the Trail Blazers.

Portland crossed the bench before Boston took a 64-58 lead after halftime.

Portland coach Chauncey Billups said: “I’ve never seen a team that needed the bench to inspire starters. “It has to be another way around.”

Boston took control in the second half with a good start to the third quarter. The Celtics pushed their lead as high as 26 before Portland started the game with 5:51 left.

The Celtics continued to pour in. Former Oregon star Payton Prichard scored 16 points in the final six minutes, sending the Celtics bench into a frenzy. The bench has been called a mocking technique for celebrating Prichard’s three-pointer to send Boston to 145-114.

“You want to see him do well,” Udoka said. “The crowd was very supportive of a hometown hero but it was a bit out of place when our boys were so enthusiastic and lacked technique. I finally apologize to Chauncey for that. I didn’t mean to let it get out of hand like that. You’re happy for him, but there’s an insurmountable line there. “

Boston’s 145 points are the most points ever recorded by an away team in Blazers history.

NEW START

Saturday night’s game was Portland’s first after Basketball Executive Chairman Neil Olshey was fired. With Joe Cronin taking over as interim general manager, Billups expressed respect for Cronin’s new position and excitement to be working together.

“I look forward to working with Joe,” Billups said. “Honestly, Joe is a man. I don’t overlook that, I don’t think anyone should. He’s been in the game for a long time, he’s thought of by a lot of people and I think Joe is just as qualified as most people. He’s very good. It’s easy to jump over there and look for the next move. But right now, Joe is the next move.”

FIRST FOR EVERYTHING

Udoka was in his hometown for the first time as an NBA head coach, which he didn’t take lightly.

“There is a first for everything, as I mentioned. But this obviously means more going home,” said Udoka. “A lot of family and friends are here and here for the first time in this capacity, so obviously it means a lot. For me, it’s nice to come back and see family and friends for a short while, but also to get on with business.”

Udoka visited Jefferson High School before the game.
