Taron Egerton explains why he quit West End play ‘Cock’ after fainting on stage

Taron Egerton has explained why he canceled his first play in the West End this spring.

In March the rocket Man star made his West End debut opposite Bridgeton‘s Jonathan Bailey in a new production of Mike Bartlett’s play tail.

However, his time in production was short-lived. During the first show, Egerton collapsed onstage mid-performance.

He briefly returned to production but then tested positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw for a week. Instead of returning to production, he then dropped out entirely, citing “personal reasons.”

In a new interview with The New York TimesEgerton explained that a cancer diagnosis in his family forced him to withdraw from production.

“Late the end of last year a close family member was diagnosed with cancer and I quit a movie to get home and be with that person,” he explained.

“I thought I was ready to get back to work with the play, but I wasn’t. I had to go and it was sad and absolutely one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make.”

tail follows John (Bailey), a man who falls in love with a woman (Jade Anouka) after breaking up with his longtime boyfriend (Egerton). Egerton was replaced in the production by Joel Harper-Jackson.
