Take a shot at Tony Finau

With the Masters approaching, this week’s Valero Texas Open offers the last chance for PGA Tour players to book their ticket to Augusta.

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio tends to be one of the toughest tests on the tour, although in recent years 17-20 year olds have won the event. It’s a 7,435-yard, par-72 course that tends to make scoring much more difficult when there’s some wind.

The course is quite long and should favor strong drivers.

Corey Conners, Andrew Landry, Charley Hoffman, Kevin Chappell, Brendan Steele and Jimmy Walker have all won here. It’s not the strongest group of champions as the tournament has been placed on the schedule in recent years, but all would consider the tee-ball one of the strongest parts of their game when they won.

Rory McIlroy opens the top of the board. This should be a good course for him. He has not played here since 2013 when he was second to Martin Laird. With his strength off the tee and decent form lately, he was able to win this event without many of the top names he faced.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth is next. It’s not ideal for the course, but it climbs well enough to make up for the lack of skill off the tee.

But I only bet on one player with odds below 40/1: Tony Finau.

Finau played his last two games pretty well and passed Xander Schauffele last week. He also fought here in 2017 and finished third. Overall, Finau’s game wasn’t okay, but Florida was never really a good place for him. If its shape starts to develop, this price is fair in this range.

The game: Tony Finau (36/1). Take a shot at Tony Finau
