Suspected gunman shot dead by police officer after gunfire broke out at Mississippi Mudbug Festival

A suspect Protect was shot dead by a police officer on Saturday night when there was a shootout in the family Mississippi Mudbug Festival.

Officials said two or three gunmen opened fire in and around a vehicle at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds around 10 p.m Jackson.

Five people were shot dead and injured in the attack, including a police officer and four innocent bystanders.

Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies working at the event responded to the scene and an unidentified man was shot dead.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said at a news conference late Saturday that the deceased man was believed to be one of the shooters and was likely killed by an officer’s fire.

“We believe one of the law enforcement officers fired his gun and we believe at this time that the victim who died may be attributable to the officer involved shoot,” he said.

“We believe the deceased person was actively involved in the incident reported in relation to the shooting and the multiple shots fired.”

Two unnamed youths were taken into custody and a vehicle, two rifles and at least one pistol believed to be linked to the shooting were recovered from the scene.

The five people who sustained gunshot wounds are in stable condition at the hospital and are not believed to have been involved in the initial shooting or the events leading up to it, Sheriff Jones said.

It’s not clear what led to the initial exchange of fire, but the sheriff vowed to get to the bottom of what happened.

“At this point we don’t know what the motive is or what exactly happened,” he said.

“We’re going to find out exactly what happened. We will find out who is involved and they should be held accountable and responsible for this very inconsiderate incident.”

The sheriff would not reveal the identity of the officer or law enforcement agency he is linked to, saying that “will come out at a later date.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist.

The Mudbug Festival, billed as a family event with crawfish cooking and eating competitions, live performers and carnival rides, remains closed on Sunday.

The annual event, which debuted last year, kicked off on Wednesday and was scheduled to conclude on Sunday night with headlining vocalist Bobby Rush’s graduation. Suspected gunman shot dead by police officer after gunfire broke out at Mississippi Mudbug Festival
