Suspect charged in collision that killed 18-year-old pregnant girl

A 21-year-old man has been formally charged in connection with a back-to-back crash that killed his passenger, an 18-year-old pregnant girl, in March.

Damian Antonio Flores was arrested on the morning of December 1 after Indio Police investigators identified him as the driver of the vehicle.

The crash happened on March 9, 2021. Police say Flores was driving a Dodge Dart that crashed into a power pole. in front of Winchell’s Donuts on Monroe StreetNorth of National Highway 111.

The passenger in the car, 18-year-old Debbie Nelson, was seriously injured. She was declared dead in the hospital three days later. Police said Flores fled the scene before officers arrived.

There is no word from the police on how investigators were able to connect Flores to the crime.

Flores is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Friday. He faces multiple charges including motor vehicle manslaughter due to gross negligence and reckless driving resulting in death/injury.

He’s still behind bars on $500,000 bail.
