But in 1976, he became known as the East Regional Rapist when he assaulted 10 women in the Sacramento County area. The attacks began to escalate to violence, and by 1979, when they abruptly stopped, he had assaulted at least 50 women in the area.

For survivors, like Kris Pedretti and Gay Hardwick, decades passed without answers.

“I heard nothing more from law enforcement,” Hardwick said. “There’s no closure. There’s no justice for forever.”

The police used every tool at their disposal to try to track him down, but it wasn’t until 2001 that the East Area Rapist attacks were officially linked to the Original Night Stalker murders in Southern California.

Finally, in 2016, DNA technology helped authorities identify the man now dubbed the Golden State Assassin as Joseph DeAngelo, who lives in Sacramento County.

DeAngelo was tried for 13 murders and 13 counts of kidnapping. Although Pedretti and Hardwick were unable to formally prosecute their case, he eventually admitted guilt in their assaults, among other unsolved cases.

It helped women find some sense of closure, and meeting so many survivors inspired Pedretti to start her own sexual assault support group with Hardwick’s help.
