Supply chain problems create disposable mask shortage

HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK– Supply chain shortages have negatively affected industries throughout the country. Now, there’s a shortage that worries some health officials.

Just as the number of COVID-19 is increasing, the country is currently experiencing a shortage of disposable masks.

Why is there a shortage?

“As for the general shortage of some PPE products that exist in North America and the US, it has to do with the global supply chain issue we are experiencing – an issue related to COVID-19 and the The second issue is related to the flow of goods because of supplier staffing shortages,” said Greg Tsagris, president of Phoenix Quality Manufacturing, a mask maker in Jackson, Ohio.

He also said another reason for the shortage is that the demand for masks has not been consistent.

“One of the things with masks, it’s not like food products, where there’s steady demand, because people need to eat every day. Masks have [their] flows based on previous outbreaks. So we had the initial COVID-19 that caused the outbreak, the delta variant that caused the outbreak, and now we have omicrons and that causes [additional] boom and increased purchases,”

What can companies do to ensure they receive a constant flow?

“One thing we’ve always advocated is buying local and buying in the US By supporting local supply chains and local manufacturers in Ohio and surrounding areas in the United States, we’re supporting production aids and means of production are here,” explains Tsagris.

He said that companies taking these steps would eliminate lengthy maritime logistics chains, products would be ready in times of crisis and “…if the nations of the world had to close their borders because of COVID-19 or future pandemics, we have local supplies here.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there is a few options to anyone if they are not using a disposable mask, including a cloth mask.
