The first trailer of the Super Mario Bros movie was released on Thursday (October 6th) and reveals Chris Pratt’s voice for the world famous Italian plumber.
Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri previously promised that Pratt’s role as a video game character would not offend Italians after his casting faced criticism.
Pratt also reassured fans himself, saying that his voice for the character was “updated and unlike anything you’ve heard before in the Mario world.”
“I worked really closely with the directors and tried a few things and ended up with something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear,” he said in an interview with diversity.
However, after the trailer was released, many fans wondered if the actor used any accent at all; It has been pointed out that Pratt’s voice does not sound any different than his own.
“Who knew Chris Pratt’s big secret voice in the Mario movie would be his normal speaking voice,” he wrote hard disk Magazine on Twitter.
“Incredible, Chris Pratt really did his best Chris Pratt voice,” replied another.
“Chris Pratt says he worked so hard on the Mario voice just to make it sound like Chris Pratt is the funniest thing,” wrote another viewer.
However, many fans were quick to defend Pratt: “[A]few seconds of a sample and the world is [poop emoji] on Chris. It doesn’t have to be EXACTLY how we’ve had it for 4 decades.”
“You can hear a little accent and that’s not bad for Mario. This is going to be fun,” the tweeter continued.
Fans were also divided over the use, or lack thereof, of the Italian accent in Pratt’s voice.
“At least Pratt wasn’t trying to have an Italian accent,” one fan wrote, while another disagreed, “We all know the Mario Brothers are both Italian, NOT American, but Pratt isn’t even trying! As a part Italian, I’m a bit offended by that.”
“I think if we get mad enough we can force Chris Pratt to re-record all of his lines with an exaggerated Italian accent,” joked another fan.
The Super Mario Bros movie is slated for release on April 7, 2023.
