The 2022 Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Show Midway is the dream team of the younger generation, with five big names participating, including Eminem, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar.
The Super Bowl Haltime Show has always been a major event in its own right, starting from marching bands in their original form to multimillion-dollar productions with iconic musical repertoire, attract 96 million viewers by 2021.
The first Super Bowl, and thus the first halftime show, was in 1967.
The program in the middle of the half also had its share of controversy and hotly discussed moments.
Super Bowl 2022 will take place on Sunday, February 13 and will be broadcast live on NBC and the Peacock streaming service. The broadcast will begin at 6pm ET, with the start time set at 6:30pm
Eighteen years ago, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s “wardrobe incident” witnessed around the world shocked viewers and caused Jackson to suffer a much harsher punishment than his fellow Timberlake. ever received, damaging her career while bringing him down.
By 2015, conversations around the Super Bowl had solidified on social media, spawning viral moments like Katy Perry’s “left shark” who hilariously went out of sync with the rest of the performers. .
But not a single moment would have happened without Michael Jackson’s groundbreaking 1993 performance. When he appeared for the first game of the Super Bowl on stage, he stood in silence for two minutes before commencing his act. Some viewed it as smug – but he had a plan. Let them wait for it. What followed was a never-before-seen halftime show.
That was the beginning of placing big stars as performing acts in the Super Bowl Halftime show.
Take a look back at the past decade and other standout moments from the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
2021: The Weeknd
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this is the first time the artist has had a halftime break forced to perform with health care procedures, social distancing fans, and so many audiences having their cardboard cut out. The Weeknd also makes a back-to-back reference to pay homage to Michael Jackson’s 1993 performance. A point worth mentioning for viewers? His ice-covered face leads to and animated appearances at the show. His planned appearance is a commentary on the state of plastic surgery in Hollywood, and the need to be endorsed for superficial reasons.
2020: Shakira and Jennifer Lopez
Shakira and Jennifer Lopez made headlines with special guests Bad Bunny, J Balvin and Emme Muñiz. The powerhouse performance was indeed met with a lot of complaints from some conservative parents who watched the show, who thought the dance moves were too revealing, and that it was like showing their children a ” porn show”. Another “viral” moment on the show that quickly started trending on Twitter was Shakira waving her tongue at the camera. While some were mocking the tongue wag, others explained that it’s actually called zaghrouta, or sore in English. “It’s the playful sound Arabic speakers make when cheering and celebrating,” said one Twitter user.
2019: Maroon 5
There’s Travis Scott, Big Boi, and the Georgia State University Marching Band. No midday show in the 2010s would be complete without hilarious memes created in real time. Maroon 5 Definitely a good resource. Lead singer Adam Levine was the main target. From the tank top that some say looks like his grandmother’s curtains, to him taking off his shirt and Twitter users saying his tattoos make him look like a… “Human Ouija board”, quick and furious memes. Many also expected a more substantial appearance from Spongebob (also performed by Travis Scott) and many were disappointed.
2017: Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga just knows how to make the break right. She kicked it off – pun intended – by diving from the rooftop of NRG Stadium in Houston, which quickly became a viral moment on social media. She used 300 drones to create a spectacular image, marking the first time drones have been used in a mid-time performance. It was the second most watched show and actually gained a higher viewership than the game itself.
2015: Katy Perry
Katy Perry performed with special guests Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliott, and the Arizona State University Sun Marching Band. If a performance of “I Kissed a Girl” with Lenny Kravitz crying on his guitar wasn’t enough to send audiences into a frenzy, the arrival of 2000s legend Missy Elliott was. And who can forget “left shark?” With social media inevitably becoming an essential part of the Super Bowl and halftime viewing, left sharks started trending on Twitter. The hilarious off-beat shark stole the show during Katy Perry’s “California Girls” performance. The dancer behind the snappy asynchronous shark said he will forever be grateful he made history. Katy Perry’s performance also cemented itself as the most-watched mid-show ever.
Queen Bey gave the world what they had been waiting for: another performance from Destiny’s Child. At the time, it was the most tweeted moment in Twitter history. It was an acclaimed performance that many say steered the mid-show away from the “father band” and reinforced the emergence of female power. One of the performance’s shining moments came when her old friends from Destiny’s Child stepped onto the stage and performed with her. In the age of Twitter, it also released a series of unflattering screenshots of Bey’s facial expressions.
Featuring LMFAO, Cirque du Soleil, Nicki Minaj, MIA, Cee Lo Green, Andy Lewis, Avon High School Drum Team, Center Grove High School Drum Team, Fishers High School Drum Team, Beat Team Franklin High School drums, Southern University Dance Dolls, a 200-person choir consisting of Indianapolis locals. Madonna is the first famous female artist to perform since Diana Ross in 1996. She says it’s one of the most grueling rehearsals she’s ever had. The only controversy (apart from Madonna’s face-to-face performance)? MIA throws the bird in front of the camera.
2009: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
This performance also has breakdowns of sorts – Springsteen Knees slide crotch into the camera. Luckily, his clothes and camera were still intact at the end of the flub.
All salute the Prince. Prince’s performance is often considered one of the greatest mid-time performances of all time. A true pro, Prince continues to deliver a performance of a lifetime even when it starts to rain — in “Purple Rain.” It became a magical moment in Super Bowl history.
2004: Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Simpson, P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock
There were four other stars performing on the 2004 halftime show, but no one remembers anything but the biggest scandal in recent halftime history. During a performance of “Rock Your Body” with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, Timberlake ripped off part of her clothes, revealing her nipples. Criticism and controversy raged, Jackson’s career more miserable than Timberlake. After this, rock bands were booked for mid-time performances for years.
2001: NSYNC and Aerosmith, featuring Britney Spears, Nelly and Mary J. Blige
NSYNC reached its peak with the tune “Bye, Bye, Bye.” The show opens with a goofy introduction by Ben Stiller as his character “Dodgeball”. As NSYNC danced, Aerosmith joined in with their hit “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing”. Britney Spears joined later, singing “Walk This Way”, with Mary J. Blige joining in even later and making a very brief appearance to sing along.
