Devin Booker has a slight hamstring strain and that could mean some tough sledding for the Phoenix Suns in the short term.
The Suns announced Booker’s injury diagnosis on Wednesday. True, you haven’t given a timetable for his return, Adrian Wojnarowski reports that he is “unlikely” to play Games 3 and 4 in New Orleans.
The injury has the potential to affect the entire NBA playoffs — even if Booker can play, there’s a chance hamstring issues will linger and make him less effective.
When the playoffs began, the Suns were the clear 2-1 favorite to win the NBA championship. The next highest contender were the Bucks at 4/1.
Currently, the Suns are still the championship favorites, but their odds have fallen to 3.5 to 1. The Warriors, who have had two wins against the Nuggets so far, have risen from 6/1 to fellow favorites at 3.5/1 since the postseason began.
The eighth-seeded Pelicans rallied past the Suns in the second half for a 125-114 win after Booker went down Tuesday night. The Guard had torched New Orleans for 31 points in the first half.
The Suns, who reached the NBA Finals last year before losing to the Bucks in six games, had by far the best record in the league this season. At 64-18, Phoenix had eight more wins than second-best team, the Memphis Grizzlies.
Booker averaged 26.8 points per game during the regular season and sat on the fringes of NBA MVP considerations behind Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Suns and Pelicans are currently tied by one game in their first round best-of-seven series.
