Student Melanie Ramos found dead in high school bathroom: lawsuit

A 15-year-old Los Angeles student who died of a suspected drug overdose was missing for eight hours before her body was found by her friend’s stepfather in her high school’s bathroom, lawyers behind a new lawsuit said Wednesday.
Student Melanie Ramos was tragically pronounced dead in the bathroom on September evening by paramedics of suspected fentanyl poisoning after officials at Helen Bernstein High School didn’t bother to search for the girl and, as a result, may have delayed medical attention , which could have saved her, a lawsuit was filed Monday, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The wrongful death and negligence lawsuit, brought by the late student’s mother, Elena Perez, says her daughter and her friend – who also overdosed and was hospitalized – were killed by the police around 8:30 p.m. on September 13 Girlfriend’s stepparents were found.

Ramos’ girlfriend woke up around 8pm that day to find Ramos unconscious and met her father outside.
A school administrator called Perez earlier that day to inform her that Ramos was out of class, the lawsuit said, according to the LA Times.
LAPD Chief Michael Moore reportedly said Ramos took a pill she believed to be Percocet but was instead laced with fentanyl, although a detailed autopsy is pending, which will also show how long she was dead. before she was found, the LA Times reported.
“If it weren’t for the other party’s parents, my niece might not have been found until the next day,” Gladys Manriques, Ramos’ aunt, said during Wednesday’s news conference, according to CBS Los Angeles. “That’s why we want justice. We don’t want another parent to suffer what we are suffering.”
Perez learned of her daughter’s death from LAPD early this morning.

Two teenage students have been arrested in connection with the girl’s death from an overdose.
The lawsuit also details how the high school failed to take action to stop the flow of illegal drugs in the school and make it easily accessible to teens.
The lawsuit alleges the school failed to conduct “bathroom cleans” to find students selling or using drugs, according to the LA Times.

“Children were buying and selling and using drugs in Bernstein’s restroom, and administrators on campus did nothing about it,” attorney Michael Carrillo said, the newspaper reported.
The Los Angeles Unified School District declined to comment on the lawsuit, but said, “The safety and welfare of our students and staff remain our top priority.”
