stranger things Star Shannon Purser has spoken out about a lack of body diversity in Hollywood, claiming fat actors aren’t being cast as “iconic fat characters”.
Her comments come just after a photo of Emma Thompson in a fat suit in the upcoming reboot went viral Mathilde.
Purser, who played the popular character of Barb in the hit Netflix sci-fi, wrote on Twitter: “They don’t hire fat actors for iconic fat characters because they want a big name star.
“There are almost no fat stars with big names because fat actors have no chance of advancement,” she wrote on Tuesday (June 20). “We are not allowed to rise because the industry sees us as two-dimensional set pieces.”
Other actors and cultural critics have also made similar statements in recent years. Back in 2019, James Corden said “chubby” actors would be barred from big movie roles.
Purser played Barb in the first two seasons of stranger things. She then appeared in the romantic comedy Sierra Burgess is a loser and the CW’s teen drama Riverdale.
