The art-pop star’s iconic ’80s hit single “Running Up That Hill” is currently the most-streamed song on iTunes as it features prominently in the first episode of the new season of “Stranger Things.”
On the show, the track is used to punctuate Max Mayfield’s (Sadie Sink) storyline as she struggles to reconcile the complicated death of her brother Billy, who was possessed by an evil force during Season 3.
The 80s-inspired horror series has just released its highly-anticipated fourth season on Netflix over the holiday weekend.
In the season 4 premiere, a terrified Max listens to the British musician on her portable cassette player while avoiding her worried friends and advisors on the halls of Hawkins High School.
After its debut in 1985, “Running Up That Hill” reached #3 in the UK Singles Chart, while in the US it charted in the top 40 on the Billboard 200.
The hit was the first single to be released from Bush’s album Hounds of Love, released that same year. Both the single and album received critical acclaim at the time, with “Hounds of Love” since being named one of the greatest records of all time by a number of music critics, including Rolling Stone and Pitchfork.
A 2012 remix of “Running Up That Hill” peaked at number 6 in the UK Singles Chart while also making it onto the soundtrack of that year’s Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony.
Bush, 63, has remained active through the decades, releasing her latest album, 50 Words For Snow, in 2011. at the venue.
The prog rocker and acclaimed modern dancer has been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame three times, with her final nod coming this year.
Bush isn’t the first cast member to enjoy a belated boost thanks to the Netflix thriller known for leaning heavily on 1980s suburban settings. For example, the theme song from the 1984 fantasy film NeverEnding Story was heard in several episodes of the third season.
English singer Limahl, now 63, who recorded the single composed by Giorgio Moroder, told Entertainment Weekly at the time that he was “very touched” to see the recording on Stranger Things.
“I didn’t know the show was that big, of course I’m going to watch it now. That song seems to have got everyone really excited,” he said.
