stranger things Star Caleb McLaughlin has paid tribute to his real-life hero, Kobe Bryant, in the latest season of the sci-fi series.
In the first episode of the fourth season – released May 27 – McLaughlin’s character Lucas Sinclair is featured as a new member of the Hawkins High basketball team.
Netflix confirmed this week that Lucas’ jersey number is a nod to the late NBA Lakers player.
“The #8 jersey Lucas is wearing is a nod to Kobe Bryant’s first jersey number. Caleb McLaughlin is a huge fan and came up with the idea of paying tribute to Kobe through his character’s jersey,” the streamer tweeted.
Bryant wore number eight for his first ten years as a Laker before switching to number 24 at the start of the 2006 season.
Bryant died in a helicopter crash in January 2020 along with his daughter Gianna and seven others.
Aside from acting, McLaughlin has been playing basketball for years and even made an appearance at the 2018 All-Star Weekend Celebrity Game.
In other stranger things news, producer Shawn Levy recently addressed fan theories about Will Byers’ (Noah Schnapp) sexuality.
In an interview, he said, “Without going into where we’re going later in season four [Volume II]I guess I’ll just say that there aren’t many accidents stranger things.”
“Every single character has a clear purpose and strategy and real thoughts,” Levy continued. “So if you walked away from Volume I and felt those breadcrumbs of plot and character, it’s probably no coincidence.”
