In another image, the stairs of the 1890 neoclassical house were inaccessible due to piles of rubbish blocking the entrance including a garden bench, a lamp and a pantry and games for the empty cat.

Other photos capture the disrepair of the property with wallpaper peeling from the walls and a fireplace stacked high with food containers.

The images were taken by photographer and urban explorer Abandoned Southeast during a visit to an abandoned house in Alabama.

The urban explorer captured the images with his Canon RP camera.

The property is thought to have been built in 1890 for Rebecca Erwin – the granddaughter of prominent local lawyer and politician John Erwin.

Rebecca died in the 1930s and the property was sold in the late 1980s to a woman known only as ‘Anne’ with the promise that the buyer would restore the property.

Anne is a recluse and a local Abandoned Southeast talking to them said they hadn’t seen her in 15 years but noted that she had a lot of broken furniture from the seams of the house.

In January 2021, a postman noticed letters piled up inside Anne’s mail box and contacted police to conduct a welfare check, where she was found dead in her backyard at the age of 80. .

JUNK ‘PILED UP’

At the time of her death, the house had no air conditioning, heating or plumbing, and only had electricity in one room.

“Steping inside and seeing how she spent the last years of her life was overwhelming,” says the Abandoned Southeast website.

“It’s a glimpse into how a mental illness like hoarding can take someone’s life.

“I am very sad to see the previous owner live in such a way. I’ve been in a lot of abandoned houses and I’ve never come across a hoard this heavy.

“Some parts of the house have a small walkway you can squeeze through but most of it is just stuff piled on top of each other with no room to walk through.

“When I first walked inside, the smell was overwhelming. I have never encountered anything like it. I had to go back outside and put on a double mask so I could breathe inside.

“The floor was littered with animal dung and piles of cat dung. After walking through the house, my shoes and socks smelled so bad that I had to throw them away.

“I feel like this house is a diamond in the rough. I hope these pictures are seen by someone with enough means and desire to save this house.”
