Check your garden before the storm hits

Before the bad weather, Hannah Isitt, GoCompareHome insurance professionals recommend fastening anything that is likely to fall or be blown away, like garden furniture, wheeled crates, or plants.

If you have any ladders or equipment that is supported or lying around, carefully move them to a more airtight location – ideally a warehouse, if you have one – to prevent them from being damaged or caused. .

If you have outdoor items, such as chairs or potted plants, they may be covered in your policy if they break.

“For some items, it is impractical to move them inside, so some insurance providers will cover items left outdoors, like sun loungers and plants,” explains Hannah.

“However, to qualify for a claim, you may have to take what they consider ‘reasonable steps’ to protect the items yourself.

“This may include securing items to the ground and using covers.”
