An increase in people moving to Southwest Florida’s largest city is affecting storage unit prices and waiting times.
Extra Space Storage, Cube Smart, A1 Shelters and XS Storage are four different companies providing the same service on the two-mile stretch of Pine Island Road in Cape Coral and countless others in the city.
The reason there are so many storage units in Cape Coral is because of the growth rate.
“We called around and everyone was booked. There isn’t anything available and there’s no telling when they’ll have anything available,” Millers said.
The Millers are moving to Georgia. They’ve had the storage unit for about 14 years and got another one a few months ago, and they don’t come cheap.
“The cost here is $185 for a 10 x 20 point. In Hartwell, where we’re going, I get points 11 to 30 for a hundred dollars a month.”
The couple uses the storage units to keep items that they will place in the basement or garage.
Cape Coral Council member Tom Hayden said with demand for storage units growing, he expected costs to go up.
That’s why the city is working with developers to build more storage units.
“If we bring in two or three or 4,000 residents a year, which is the rate we’re doing, and their homes may not have that much storage, they’ll move out.”
As for the Millers, their advice is for those looking for a storage unit, downsize and save your money.
“It’s not an easy proposition to define something, and the price isn’t cheap anymore,” Millers said.
