Spielberg says he doesn’t feel ready to do a musical.
Steven SpielbergThe name is practically synonymous with “Hollywood,” and for good reason: he’s made a movie of all genres, now finally marking his first white whale, the play. musical, with new critical hits West story. But it has long been rumored that his lover Peter Pan take Hook, released in 1991 at the height of Spielberg’s filmmaking prowess, was also originally intended as a musical film. Now, in an interview with Guardians, Spielberg detailed why he didn’t do it Hook like a musical, and it’s only a last-minute decision.
In his words:
“I worked hard after the first week of filming and taking out all the songs. […] It was the biggest paradigm shift I’ve had as a director of a movie. It just doesn’t seem right for some weird reason. Maybe I just don’t feel ready to do a musical yet. I was fine doing those small numbers for 1941 or Doom . Temple, and then there’s a kind of zero-gravity dance for the Bee Gees in Ready Player One. I also had a few false starts with scripts that I started to develop into original musicals. At some point, I decided that I had to be brave enough to believe in my beliefs.”
It’s a myth to imagine how different a full screen is Hook must have been a musical (the film, of course, includes a few songs, such as “When You’re Alone” by Amber Scott). Meanwhile, Spielberg debuted Advice for budding filmmakers says:
“I hope they never learn anything about filmmaking. I hope they never know. I hope they never see anyone behind the curtain. I think if they don’t want to be a filmmaker, so if they don’t want to be in the business and they just want entertainment or want to be taken somewhere else, it’s best not to know too much because you don’t ‘t want to knock down that proverbial fourth wall. You want to keep yourself safe and secure from any knowledge other than what the story is throwing back at you. “
