Over the course of his more than 40-year career, Steve Vai has frequently turned the outrageously impossible into the very, very possible… and quite the outrageous.
From his days as Frank Zappa’s “stunt guitar” to his more recent exploratory and expansive solo work, Vai has consistently challenged notions of traditional guitar playing and composition. tradition – and on many occasions he even reproduced the instrument itself.
“I don’t sit around and say, ‘Okay, what can I do now to push the boundaries?’ Vai explains his approach to guitar. ‘Okay, Vai – what are you up to now that will interest you, that will excite you, and that is different from anything you’ve done before?”
The answer to that question is Vai’s latest and 10th solo album, Violate, a nine-song opus that truly pushed the boundaries of guitar music – this time, Vai actually invented not only a new guitar, but a whole new guitar playing technique.
At the same time, Violate his focused, logical and perhaps invigorating musical presentation for many years. “It’s very ‘shoulder,’ whatever that means,” he said, and then laughed. “Someone might be better than me at explaining what that is. But that’s just very honest music. Because of my many profiles, they are long and have a lot of concepts and revolve around stories. This one doesn’t have that. These are nine pretty dense all-instrumental compositions that I wanted to capture and record so I could go out there and play them live for people. “
