(Dan Tri) – The World Team Chess Championship in Malaysia has been postponed due to concerns about the new coronavirus variant Omicron and visa problems for Israeli athletes, the World Table Tennis Federation. World (WSF) said.

The tournament was set to take place in Kuala Lumpur from December 7-12, after being relocated from Tauranga, New Zealand in May due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

The identification of the Omicron variant has prompted some countries to impose travel bans, WSF said in a statement, has raised concerns that some athletes will not be able to travel to Malaysia.

The global governing body added that the possibility that not all teams would be allowed entry to Malaysia due to visa issues contributed to the decision to cancel the tournament.

Malaysia and Israel do not maintain official diplomatic relations and visitors are not allowed to enter Malaysia with an Israeli passport without the written permission of the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs.
