TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp and Honda Motor Co Ltd announced on Friday that they would join forces to develop and sell battery electric vehicles as the electronics maker advances its ambitions to become a major player in next-generation automobiles.

The two companies said in a statement that they will form a joint venture this year and intend to start selling the first model in 2025.

Honda will be responsible for manufacturing the first model, while Sony will develop the mobility service platform, they said.

The presidents of both companies will hold a press conference in Tokyo on Friday at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT).

Sony chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida announced a plan to form a new company, Sony Mobility, in January and said it was exploring commercial rollout of electric vehicles.

Though its once-dominant position in consumer electronics has been eroded by Asian competitors like South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co, Sony still has an arsenal of sophisticated technology in areas like sensors crucial to autonomous driving.
