Some children’s chocolates in the US may be linked to salmonella, Ferrero warns

Ferrero on Tuesday urged US consumers to discard some Kinder chocolate products that aren’t approved for distribution in the country, warning they could come from the batch recently recalled in Europe over possible Salmonella Typhimurium contamination became.

The North American division of the confectionery giant last week recalled the Kinder Happy Moments chocolate range and the Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats basket because they were manufactured in a facility where salmonella has been detected.

Tuesday’s voluntary recall affects two products in the US – Kinder Happy Moments Milk Chocolate and Crispy Wafers range with a best before date of July 18 and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats Basket with a best before date of July 30 – and does not affect other Kinder products, distributed or sold by Ferrero’s US arm.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Monday that Ferrero is also recalling certain Kinder chocolate products for the same reason.

The company on Tuesday released an update on the Food and Drug Administration’s request to ask Americans to discard children’s products intended for foreign markets but available for sale in the United States.

Italian company Ferrero has also recalled several batches of Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs and other products in Spain, Britain and Ireland, while Belgian health authorities have urged consumers not to eat several recalled Kinder products.

Ferrero claimed Tuesday there have been no reports of illness from the chocolates in the United States and it is working with the FDA to address the issue.
