SOUTHAMPTON, England (Reuters) – Watford striker Cucho Hernandez paid off Southampton with two first-half goals that helped the relegation-threatened side seal a crucial 2-1 Premier League win on Sunday.

The result at St Mary’s Stadium helped Roy Hodgson’s team to a two-game losing streak and secured three points that moved them up a spot to 18th place, while the Saints suffered a third loss at the trot in midfield.

“I thought we played well from the first minute. We didn’t do so badly on Thursday,” Hodgson, whose side have lost their last two games 3-2 to Arsenal and 4-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, told the BBC.

“We’re not at the top of the table, we’re almost at the bottom and when you’re 3-0 down the players have to show tremendous character to come back from that. I’m satisfied with today’s performance.”

Hodgson said he was delighted with his forwards’ efforts as Hernandez scored his third goal in three games.

“The front players gave us another layer of energy,” Hodgson said. “We created a few chances to score. Our crowd today was incredible – it was like a home game. You can’t ask for more when you’re a Watford player.”

Watford scored in the 14th minute when Colombia’s Hernandez rushed on a weak back pass from Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu and found the goal from a tight angle after rounding goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

An unmarked Hernandez doubled Watford’s lead 20 minutes later when he stabilized and volleyed a Juraj Kucka cross after a patient build-up from the visitors.

Watford had several chances to take a 3-0 lead but Southampton pulled back a goal before half-time when Mohamed Elyounoussi tapped Che Adams’ header from a James Ward-Prowse free-kick.

Southampton kept pressing after the break but Watford defended valiantly and rode his luck late when they conceded a foul in a dangerous area and Ward-Prowse narrowly missed the target of the resulting free-kick.
