“Smoking Roach” wipes out “Pizza Rat” as New York’s worst vermin

This redefines “smoking cockroaches”.

Thought New York City’s Pizza Rat was majestic? Enter the Cigarette Cockroach, a giant bug that has been spotted scurrying through an undisclosed apartment in the Big Apple with a crab stick in tow, scavenging out all vermin competition.

A video of the tiny tobacco smoker is exploding on Instagram as urban wildlife enthusiasts marvel at what may be the animal kingdom’s newest celebrity villain.

“Roach is just trying to have a quiet smoke,” reads the caption for the startling clip, which was uploaded a day ago before the popular Instagram account WhatIsNewYork.

In the video, shot through a gate in an undisclosed New York neighborhood, the enterprising creepy-crawler can be seen seemingly dragging a cigarette butt across the sidewalk.

Snowy owl from Central Park, eat your heart out.

It’s unclear why the cockroach smoked; However, These pantry raiders are known for consuming a hodgepodge of unsavory itemsincluding paper, clothing and even their own feces.

‘Gram Gawkers had a great day seeing the tiny nicotine devil.

“NY roaches don’t lead the healthy lifestyle, it’s the stress,” one prankster joked on social media, while another quipped, “How do you like this video of my ex?”

“How dare he! He’s not 25 feet from the entrance,” joked another, referring to NYC’s smoking ordinance.

Some movie fans compared the cigarette-loving insect to the talking cockroaches in the movies Joe’s Apartment and Men In Black.

This is not the first cockroach to smoke: in 2019, a cockroach was filmed carrying a cigarette across a sewer grate.

Either way, these two “roach smokers” deserve a place alongside the pizza rat in the pantheon of anthropomorphic Big Apple vermin. For the uninitiated, this fast-food-loving rodent went viral in 2015 after it was filmed dragging a crunchy slice down the subway steps in an iconic scene in New York.

Pizza Rat achieved such mythical status that the Yankees’ minor-league team temporarily changed their name to the “Staten Island Pizza Rats” in 2018 – much to the chagrin of the Bronx Bombers.

Like a pie-loving Punxsutawney Phil, Pizza Rat has spawned a veritable menagerie of viral imitators. These included the East Village Nutella squirrel, a Brooklyn “hipster” avocado rat, and other trash-loving Gothamites.

In 2020, a hangry squirrel from New Jersey arguably upped the ante after stealing two slices from a family’s pizza box.
