Sixth NYC inmate to die in custody this year, identified as Emanuel Sullivan, 20

The sixth inmate to die in a New York jail this year was identified by officials on Sunday as a 20-year-old murder suspect.

Emanuel Sullivan, who was in custody for murder and robbery in a February incident, was found unresponsive in his bed at the Robert N. Davoren Center on Rikers Island Saturday afternoon, according to the Justice Department.

Sources previously told the Post that Sullivan had blood coming out of his nose when he was found by a correctional officer.

Medical personnel arrived immediately but found no pulse and pronounced Sullivan dead at around 4:25 p.m., the DOC said.

It’s unclear how long he was dead, but his death does not appear to be a suicide, prison sources told The Post.

“The residential area was manned and all tours were conducted throughout the day,” the DOC said in a press release Sunday.

Sullivan was due to appear in court again this week, records show.

The death of Mr. Sullivan fills our hearts with sadness as we understand that everyone in our care is a loved one,” DOC Commissioner Louis Molina said in a statement. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

The death is being investigated.

Sullivan was the third inmate to die at the troubled prison that month alone.

The last inmate to die in custody was 31-year-old Mary Yehudah, who was found lifeless in her cell on May 18. She died just 10 days after a 25-year-old inmate hanged himself.

Last year, 16 people died in city jails – the most since 2013.

The latest comes in the wake of a damning federal report that found conditions in troubled city prison systems were “severe and potentially life-threatening.”

The #HALTsolidarity campaign slammed the city for appalling prison conditions.

“Enough is enough. I am so tired and devastated to hear of the death of Emanuel Sullivan,” said Victor Pate, co-director of the organization. said in a statement tweeted. “It is beyond heartbreaking that we continue to hear about the many completely preventable deaths on Rikers Island. How many more people will die before our officials finally start releasing people, stop sending people to these deadly prisons, and do something to change the horrific conditions?” Sixth NYC inmate to die in custody this year, identified as Emanuel Sullivan, 20
