‘Shibby has been an important part of the County for many years and will be greatly missed by everyone at the club. She is at the heart of women’s rugby development in the club and an inspiration to girls in the youth division.

‘Shibby was a teammate and friend and we deeply mourn her loss. Our sincere love, thoughts and condolences go to Shibby’s family at this devastating time.

‘We very much hope that their privacy will be respected by everyone as they come to terms with their tragic loss.’

Cattigan has also frequently spoken out against sexism in the sport and revealed how abuse forced her to give up the sport at school.

‘I gave up playing rugby in high school after being bullied for being the only girl playing. I have been called a man, in a sentimental way and many other derogatory things,’ she wrote on Twitter last year.

‘When I was young and impressive at 14, this had a huge impact on me and I gave up the sport I was clearly gifted with because of the narrow opinions of others.

‘I made a random decision at the age of 19 to go back to rugby and play for one team, one first team, one club team and 14 caps for my national team after that and I Haven’t looked back since. That day I made a promise to myself that I would never let other people’s opinions change my life again. ‘
