A pioneer in her administration, Lan Ma chose to defy norms and assume motherhood despite assumptions about her ethnicity, age, and single status.
After their children are grown up, many women enjoy the feeling of being free from their children’s care and spending time focusing on themselves.
However, for Lan Ma, 53, her definition of freedom is different, saying that having children is her liberation. However, she is faced with ignorance, with many societal assumptions against her, such as her age, ethnicity, and the fact that she is single.

When her children, 17-year-old Tyler and 19-year-old Thomas, grew up and didn’t need much care, she initially considered starting a health-related business, but didn’t feel well. This is when Lan Ma chose the path of IVF, Born Toby in 2019. She expressed:
“I think I’ve been lucky with Toby because he’s a happy boy and never cries.”
Realizing that the 2-year-old would now be a lonely child, she decided to do IVF again. She gave birth to Tara, Toby’s biological sister in November 2021. Lan Ma claims that they are almost identical.
The mother of four has also tackled issues around age, single motherhood and race. Toby and Tara are white while she is Asian – a fact that can cause ignorance. Lan Ma confirm:
“The only thing that matters is health.”
Talking about her age-related physical and health problems, this mom says she keeps herself in shape and feels better than she did when she was 30.

As a single mother, Lan Ma says this independence has helped her become self-sufficient, easily putting aside the perceptions and opinions of others. Talking about her decision to have children, she expressed:
“I’ve decided that I have more life to give to my children, who are my purpose, meaning, and calling in life.”
With her fortitude ahead of her path, Lan Ma will surely raise the little duo to go on powerful journeys of their own without caring what others think.
Strong women continue to open new paths for each other, showing that there is more than just one way to live.
This is what Debby Neal-Strickland Marthe did when she decided to donate her kidney to her husband’s ex-wife Mylaen Anderson-Merthe. The surgery came just two days after her wedding to her current spouse.

The two now call themselves “The Kidney Sisters” and have matching bracelets with the implant date engraved on the jewelry.
What do you think of Lan Ma and Debby’s decision? Do you find them strange, and why? Are you open and supportive of them?
