Michael “shroud” Grzesiek claims that battle royale games like Apex Legends and Fortnite don’t need ranked mode to be successful, and if he had to choose between ranked and unranked mode, he would choose the latter.
Shroud is no stranger to battle royale games. He’s played everything from Apex Legends to Fortnite and Warzone over the years and is bored with the genre, although he still dabbles in it from time to time.
While streamers like Dr. Disrespect like ranked modes in battle royales and believe Warzone 2 badly needs this feature, Shroud believes the opposite is true – they don’t need a ranked mode at all.
The topic came up while playing Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt, a new free-to-play battle royale game that launched on April 27th after someone said in chat, “I hope they remove games without rank.”
Shroud responded immediately, saying he hoped the opposite would happen. “Nah. For me, I’d rather remove them from the leaderboard.” He then applied his opinion to every other battle royale game out there.
“Battle Royale games don’t need a ranked mode. They just don’t. If I were to remove “Remove Ranked Mode” or “Casual Play,” I would remove Ranked Play nine times out of ten. If you’re talking about Valorant, it’s a bit different.”
Shroud never hesitates to swim against the tide. For example, he recently argued that Fortnite Zero Build Mode is no better than Standard Mode, which is a stark contrast to what other people think. Here he did it again.
In the end, however, people want other things than battle royales. Some prefer a casual, no-frills experience, while others want to quench their thirst for competition. Shroud believes Valorant is a better fit for the latter.
