Shooting suspect leads deputies in pursuit from downtown Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A shooting suspect led deputies in a chase from downtown Fort Myers to Lehigh Acres early Monday morning, authorities said.

The incident began around 3 a.m. when police responded to the Hendry and Main Street areas of downtown Fort Myers after multiple people called 911 to report the shooting, according to the Fort Myers Police Department.

Witnesses said police people were screaming and running after firing between six and seven shots.

Police said no victims were found at the scene, but investigators found shell casings in the area.

Investigators said a short time later, the driver of the pickup truck described as the shooting suspect led authorities into a chase that ended in a crash at Lee Avenue and Sunshine Avenue in Lehigh Acres, investigators said.

The driver abandoned the pickup and was not immediately found. Police said they believe they have found the gun in connection with the early morning shootings.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the runaway.
