Shooting at Uvalde school: Former Robb primary school teacher mourns the loss of her mentor, pupil killed

UVALDE, Texas (KTRK) – Friday was another difficult night for the people of Uvalde. Crowds gathered at Robb Elementary School to mourn the 21 lives that were killed on Tuesday.

One woman tearfully spoke of her connection to the building, teachers and students in the fourth grade classroom where the shooting took place.

“Three years ago this was my school. Irma Garcia was my mentor. Those were my friends. I’ve been tutoring some of her siblings and I can’t take care of that. I don’t get it,” Regina Miles said.

People in the small community said there was no way to understand Tuesday’s mass shooting. Twenty-one white crosses now represent the victims outside Robb Elementary School.

Every day crowds come to pray at a memorial and leave gifts. Many of them were families with young children. They tried to comfort each other as best they could.

Miles said it took her three days, but she knew she had to come.

“It’s very important for me to be here. The friends I’ve made and the relationships I’ve had while I’ve been here for the first three years as a teacher have been amazing. Great women. Great families. This community has been shattered and it ‘will never be the same again,'” Miles said.

Miles gave police officers a sign of support from the elementary school she now works at.

“We won’t be done until next week. So we still have four full days ahead of us. It’s hard to go in there every day,” she said.

Although she said being at the scene of a crime was hard, she believes the hardest days would come next. It will always be when the community can overcome grief and find answers.

“Can we sit down and find a solution? How can we fix this?” she asked.
