Shirtless, screaming woman falls onto Cannes red carpet in protest at war crimes

A topless woman protesting sexual violence in Ukraine fell on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday at the premiere of “Three Thousand Years of Our Lives”.

The screaming woman wore only panties soaked in blood-red paint and had the Ukrainian flag spray-painted on her chest with the words “Stop raping us.” The word “scum” was also written on her lower back.

Video posted on Twitter shows security personnel covering the woman and escorting her off the carpet.

The gatecrasher’s protest comes amid Russia’s ongoing attack on Ukraine, which invaded the country at the end of February. This week, Ukrainian authorities identified a Russian soldier whom they suspect of committing war crimes, including alleged involvement in the gang rape of a young girl during the occupation of a village outside of Kyiv. It is far from the first reported case of rape: numerous allegations of rape have been made in the months since the beginning of the war.

The film marks George Miller’s first directorial effort since 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

The film, starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, tells the story of a scholar who meets a magician in a hotel room, where she discovers his fantastic past and is able to grant three wishes.

Miller, Swinton and Elba walked the red carpet after the protester had already been removed, Variety reported.
