Shirley Watts dead: Wife of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died aged 84

Shirley Watts, wife of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie, has died aged 84.

The news comes just 16 months after the death of her husband, Charlie Watts, who died of cancer in 2021.

Shirley died in Devon on Friday December 16 after a short illness, according to a statement from her family.

“It is with great sadness that Seraphina, Charlotte and Barry announce the passing of their beloved mother, grandmother and mother-in-law Shirley Watts,” they wrote.

“Shirley died peacefully on Friday December 16 in Devon after a short illness surrounded by her family.”

“She will also be sorely missed by her sisters Jackie and Jill and her brother Stephen,” the family said.

“Now reunited forever with her beloved Charlie,” they added.

Seraphina is Shirely and Charlie’s only child. Barry is her second husband and Charlotte is Serephina’s daughter.

Shirley originally met at the Royal College of Art in 1961 when she was studying sculpture and he was doing graphic design.

Shirley later became a very successful Arabian horse breeder, running a world class farm in her rural Devon home.

The couple married three years later and were together until Charlie died of cancer last year.

“But she always says when I come off tour that I’m a nightmare and tells me to get back out there.”

The couple’s friend Tony King is also quoted about their relationship, saying that Shirley has always “kept him in check”.

“He must never grow too big for his boots when she was around. She would call it very quickly. She wasn’t afraid to say something to knock the rug out from under his feet.”
