“She was naked to the ass”

Two Australians traveling through Europe who wanted to try a hostel for the first time recounted the “disgusting” experience that ensured they would never do it again.

Liv Hull and Demi Rutter shared their “hostel icks” on TikTok – including naked roommates, flooded showers and saggy beds.

The Sydney women said it was their first hostel experience and they were definitely not ready for what was to come.

“Our first roommate, I stopped by the next morning and she was butt bare. “Like nothing, nothing,” Rutter said.

“I don’t know what the usual politeness is for what to wear in a hostel, but I didn’t know you can’t wear anything to bed.”

The women also said they saw people sleeping with their eyes open.

On the first night, Rutter explained that she stayed with Hull because she didn’t want to sleep alone on the top bunk, having broken her arm falling off the top bunk as a child.

“I don’t know what the common courtesy of what to wear in a hostel is, but I didn’t know you can’t wear anything to bed,” Rutter said.

Then the hostel assumed she wouldn’t stay there anymore and booked the bed again, meaning they had five people in a quadruple room.

“I went to reception and said, ‘They overbooked, someone’s in our bed,’ so they literally gave us a sun lounger,” Hull said.

But that was not the end of her bad luck.

Travelers explained that the showers are unisex and “see through”.

“So when you got out of the shower, you could see the person next to you taking a shower,” Ms Rutter said.

“Just to top it off,” she said of her showerhead falling off while showering.

She added that the showers would fill up because there was so much hair clogging the drains.

Back in the room, the women admitted they should have done more research as there was no air conditioning or fan in the middle of summer.

The beds weren’t the best either.

“The whole thing got to the point where I thought I was literally sleeping on top of the man underneath me,” Ms Hull said.

“As I lay down, the mattress pushed up over my head. I thought, ‘I’m in a little tunnel down here.’”

The women hilariously concluded that dorm life wasn’t for them, but commenters said they might just have stayed in one of the worst hostels around.

“When booking a hostel it is sooooo important to read the reviews. I’ve stayed overnight before, but do my research beforehand,” advised one traveler.

“You seem to have booked the worst hostel ever! They’re definitely not like that,” said another.

“Oh my god I’ve done so many and none of it ever happened,” wrote a third.

Others took the opportunity to share their own hostel icks.

“What about that person who snoozes their alarm for about three hours?” wrote one person.

“Or the guy who decides that 3am is the perfect time to pack his suitcase.”

“The sleep trauma is real, I almost broke my neck and had to go to a chiro [for] weeks. Banned from above,” reported another.

“Memories of European hostels flooded back… the soup bowls with the strong body odors they had,” one person recalled.
