The terrifying explosion – the cause of which is still unknown – happened around 1:30 a.m. before flames tore through neighboring buildings.

Terrified residents in southwestern France were evacuated as nearly 100 firefighters tried to put out a roaring blaze.

Gas cylinders were found scattered across the floor near the building, although it remains unclear if they were a factor in the explosion.

Destructive images showed the remains of the apartment complex burned as debris spilled onto the street.

French police have opened an investigation into the deadly fire early on Monday morning.

Investigators are said to have been unable to enter the building this morning due to the heat.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced he was postponing his planned trip to Montpellier to visit the site.

He wrote in a tweet: “An explosion followed by a fire killed at least 7 people in the Pyrenees-Orientales.

“I interrupted my trip to Montpellier to get there. I am a full supporter of mobilized state services and to the people.

“Thoughts for the victims and their loved ones.”

Minister Olivier Dussopt echoed his tributes in a post, adding: “Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. The state is on their side.”
