Senator Susan Collins was arrested on Friday over the fall of Roe v. Wade beat up

PORTLAND, Maine — Sen. Susan Collins was evicted Friday over the fall of Roe v. Wade blasted as opponents aimed their votes to confirm two Supreme Court justices who majority believed it allowed states to ban abortion.

Critics of the Maine senator have not forgotten the key role she played in confirming Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, and she was once again torn on social media.

Some opponents berated Collins and attacked Collins for being naïve or complicit. Others called for her resignation. Amy Fried, a professor at the University of Maine, said Collins “helped make that happen,” and the Maine Democratic Party said part of the blame rests with Collins.

Collins was considered the key voice for Kavanaugh. She waited months before announcing her decision in a 45-minute speech. Shortly after her speech ended, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin announced that he too would vote for Kavanaugh.

The Senate vote was 50-48.

Mainers For Accountable Leadership, a liberal advocacy group, said Collins “must immediately apologize to these organizations that she dismissed and humiliated in her speech announcing her support for Kavanaugh.”

Rachel Irwin, who works for Building Back Together, which promotes President Joe Biden’s political agenda, called Friday’s abortion news a ‘legacy’ to Collins.

Collins, a Republican, has campaigned for women’s right to abortion. She’s also crossed aisles on important issues — including splits with Republicans over former President Donald Trump’s travel ban from several Muslim countries, the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and whether Trump will return home after his impeachment following the Capitol riots on Sept 24 6th 2021.

The senator said in a statement Friday that she had received assurances from Kavanaugh and Gorsuch that Roe v. Wade is an established precedent.

“Throwing a precedent overnight that the country has relied on for half a century is not conservative,” she said. “It is a sudden and radical shock to the country that will lead to political chaos, anger and a further loss of confidence in our government.”

Collins’ statement came just before Biden called the ruling “a tragic mistake.” She did not respond to an interview request from The Associated Press on Friday.

The senator targeted Gorsuch and Kavanaugh in her statement for their reversal of what they had told her privately and said in their confirmation hearings.

“This decision contradicts what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and in their meetings with me, where they both insisted on the importance of upholding long-standing precedents that the country has relied on “, she said.

The vote to confirm Gorsuch was not as close as it was for Kavanaugh, whose nomination was nearly derailed by allegations of sexual assault, which he denied. Senators approved Gorsuch’s nomination by a vote of 54 to 45.

Collins voted against nominating Amy Coney Barrett, saying it was too late in Trump’s presidency and that his successor should have made a nomination to fill the vacancy.

Despite the vitriol against Collins and the hangers being sent to her office, she easily won a fifth term in 2020.

She said she supports a bipartisan bill to codify abortion rights. “Our goal with this legislation is to do what the court should have done — to ensure the consistency of our abortion laws that Americans have relied on for 50 years,” she said.
