Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) asked the New York Times to explain whether it covered up Xi Jinping’s role in the genocide of Uighur Muslims.

In a letter to the New York Times on Thursday, Rubio said the newspaper failed to publish 403 pages of leaked Chinese government documents detailing religious persecution of the Uighurs. The senator pointed out that the documents include a 2014 speech by President Xi Jinping in which he ordered the mass detention of Uighurs in labor camps.

Rubio emphasized that the store reported or censored the lack of that information, and he sought to know if it was done on purpose. He added that too many American companies do business with China for financial gain, but that has to stop.

“Our economy and many of our most important companies have become heavily dependent on China. This dependence leads to the fact that every day, we have not only government leaders, but also large and important American corporations and industry leaders who are campaigning for political policies and take actions that are harmful to the US and good to China,” Rubio said. “Because when forced to choose profits more than billions of dollars from China or the prosperity of the country they live in and are said to be home to, they choose profit.”

Rubio also said it appears that US political leaders have known about the Uighur genocide for some time and made a conscious arrangement not to talk about it.
