Senator John Liu questions Eric Adams about his early departure from the New York Schools Hearing

State Senator John Liu on Friday rebuked Mayor Eric Adams for his hasty exit from a hearing on City Hall’s control of the country’s largest school system.
Adams appeared from the back of an SUV at the Zoom meeting and made brief remarks before signing off due to “pre-existing commitments”.
Adams handed it Staff to the Schools Chancellor David Banks to answer questions from the panel.
“I guess I’m a little grateful that the mayor showed up for a few minutes at the start of our hearing — disappointed he’s not here to answer questions from our lawmakers,” Liu said after Adams left.
The departure prompted Liu to conjure the specter of former Mayor Bill de Blasio as a paragon of diligence and accountability in comparison.
“As we debate this issue, it seems appropriate, and possibly responsible, for the mayor to actually be present at this hearing — as was previous Mayor Bill de Blasio when he answered hours-long questions from co-legislators.”

In response, Banks was quick to note that Adams left because he had to make a much-anticipated announcement on school mask mandates.
“I wouldn’t take the mayor’s inability to stay at this Zoom meeting with lawmakers as any form of disrespect,” Banks said. “He and I talk at length about this subject and I’m sorry he actually had another date that kept him away from us.”
In his opening remarks, Adams urged that the panel approve mayoral oversight for another four years.

He noted that he will be the first black mayor to operate under the system – and vowed to work with Banks to improve city schools.
